Design Indaba Expo 2006

Three Elizabeth Galloway students were chosen by a panel of renowned judges for the Emeging Creatives stand at this years' Design Indaba Expo that took place at the CTICC from 22-24 Feb. The objective of the Emerging Creatives program are to identify students that are showing great design potential and to give them a public platform for their work at the event. They also gain access and exposure to local and international media.

The three students are; Elmé Bekker and Mariet Kruger who both passed the UK accredited higher professional diploma in fashion design with distinction in November 2005; and Crystal Birch who is currently in her final year at the academy.

A total of 48 emerging creatives were chosen from the sectors of architecture, advertising, craft, décor, film, fashion, floral design, graphic design, interior, jewellery, new media, publishing, product design and visual arts. In the Fashion category there were 6 emerging creatives. Heads of Department of various institutions within South Africa were approached to submit work of their top three or five final-year students. The emerging creatives were selected form more than 140 submissions by a Curator Panel which consisted of designers and opinion makers in the creative industry.

Crystal Birch exhibited a jacket made of blanket & corset made of green bags with a skirt made of dish cloths. Mariet Kruger exhibited two outdoor jackets that transform into a two-man tent and sleeping bag respectively;and, Elmé Bekker exhibited a Voortrekker inspired wedding dress with hand dyed and textured cheese cloth combined with traditional doily cutting craft lace finish.

Each designer was given the same size facilities to dress as they see fit. The branding of the area included a brief description of the student and his or her work, as well as 50 business cards per Emerging Creative, which was produced on their behalf.
