STUDENTS BRING FLORAL CREATIONS TO LIFE

The Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion Design supplied floral fantasies with their innovative garden designs in a fashion show with a difference as part of the Robertson Garden Club centennial celebrations on Friday, 14 October 2005. The Robertson Garden Club, the second oldest club in the country, hosted a day of floral inspiration with garden tours, talks by landscaping artists and flower demonstrations by renowned florist Flower Walker. The Elizabeth Galloway Academy presented a fashion show and there was also a mini display of the South African exhibit that formed part of the Chelsea Flower Show in the UK.

Students from the Academy in Stellenbosch were asked to showcase inspirational designs interpreting a garden and floral theme. The students were briefed to design garments which will illustrate different garden styles and were encouraged to be as creative and imaginative as possible.

Ten designer outfits created with mixed materials and lots of foliage and flowers were modelled on the day. The assignment followed the complete creative process from concept drawing and design to the actual manufacturing of the pieces. These creations were inspired by a number of themes such as a French Baroque Garden with a corset-styled dress and hoop-skirt and a Wine Estate Garden, which paid tribute to the heart of the Breede River Valley. This interesting piece featured an alluring halter-neck design constructed from an intricately woven bodice and an extraordinary neckline crafted from vines.

Captivating pieces such as the English Garden-inspired dress with fragrant roses and sweet peas was a celebration of romance and femininity, while the Herb Garden outfit spiced things up.
