TOP HONOURS FOR ACADEMY AT SA FASHION WEEK
Elizabeth Galloway Fashion Academy shined in this year’s student design competition at SA Fashion Week. The annual competition for the student category had 231 entries in total, from 14 different fashion related institutions. Three students from the academy outside Stellenbosch made the top 10 in this very competitive Hat Design Challenge.
Sophy Wolfgaardt with her floral inspired “Protea Hat” with soft colours, detailed petals with a feminine touch was awarded the first place. Tarien Malherbe secured a fourth place with her flat-top, grass and ostrich egg hat with crochet detail and Marlize Kotze with an African inspired, very extravagant hat with porcupine quills made it into the eighth spot.
According to Galloway it was great that the organisers got the likes of Nkhensani Maganyi, brand originator and creative director of Stoned Cherrie and Masana Chikeka from the Department of Arts and Culture on the panel of judges.
“Hats will always make a fashion statement, especially if you look at prestigious events like The Met and The Durban July. I am delighted that our students did so well in this year’s competition. Hats can be seen as the ultimate fashion accessory from a design perspective. It is the ultimate challenge to design and produce a hat that not only compliments the clothing, but also makes a design statement and reflects the wearer’s personality”, said a proud Galloway.
