Fashion for a Cause

The Cape Kidney Association held a Fashion Show and Art auction to raise funds for the thousands of people dependant on the government health system. Established 30 years ago to assist in the special needs of people suffering from kidney failure and disease, the association relies heavily on donations for its food parcels, dialysis program, and medication and transplant services.
The venue La Cotte, in Franschoek, run by Marie de Vries and her two sons, generously opened its doors to host the event. The designs on show were from second and third year students at the Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion Design, who also produced the show. Models from Paarl based Y-Black Models, strutted their stuff in swimwear, coats and suits that covered a range of themes from ‘escapism' to ‘Carnaby Street'. The fashion show ended with three graduate ranges exploring Ballet, Vintage fashion and the Namib desert. Judging from the audience's response, these designers are on the right track, and will be busy producing orders from their ranges soon!
As this was a fund raising event, an art auction of works by Zelda Jooste, Red Hot Glass and jewelry by Noeline Kruger were up for the highest bid, along with crocheted throws and blankets made by patients on dialysis. It's great to see fashion and art taking a stand to support a good cause! An enjoyable and filling breakfast was had by all. A fantastic morning out!
